Light Up Surprise Ball Christmas Card

Hello my crafty friends

Welcome to Karen Burniston's December 2019 Designer Challenge, where we were asked to make something using the brand new Surprise Ball Pop Up. Since some of the DT like to work ahead, Karen had also posted the Oct/Nov & December Challenges well ahead so when I was creating my cards for the Pear Blossom Press & Karen Burniston Blog Hop, I also made my December Designer Challenge Card. Yes - this is a Surprise Ball Pop Up that also LIGHTS UP! I'm so happy that I can finally share it with all of you.

Before I get into the detail shots, here is a quick YouTube video so you can see all the details of my card.

I chose a 6 x 6" patterned paper pad for my card rather than use one of the three patterned paper packages I challenged myself to stick to for my holiday cards. But this one had the feel I was going for, so I went with it. The paper has lovely copper foiled bits and I do love some sparkle and shine on my holiday cards!

I also used the new Flap and Closure to hold the card in the closed position and added sparkly brads to the centre of the circles.

The is the back of the card ...

The ball on this card doesn't spin, to prevent the wires from twisting and possibly breaking. It just made sense to secure the bottom to keep everything in working order.

I fussy cut two tags from a sheet of the patterned paper, and adhered them back to back catching the side of the flap at the top edge.

The PUSH HERE stamped circle has a copper foil mat.

Below is the card unlit ...

... and then lit. I punched out a couple of circles from the sides of the ball, and added a vellum panel in behind it so it would softly diffuse the LED lights from the EZ Lights Pack. There are two windows, and since the EZ Lights come with three wires/light bulbs, I adhered the third one on the base of the card to shine through the cracks in the ball.

It's hard to see in the light I was taking the photos in, but I did take one in a darker room so you can get a better look.

I hope you will check out the rest of the Design Team ... their blogs are linked on the right. Karen Burniston will have her project tomorrow (Wednesday) on her blog.

  1. Dear 'unknown' ... Blogger doesn't have a reply button so I have to respond with another comment. Unfortunately this card is not available for purchase, it was given to a friend for Christmas. I don't sell my cards, this is a hobby for me. Glad you like it!

  2. Hi Karen. I loved your card. Can you please send the pics of how did you mount the light beneath the ball?

  3. Hello Anonymous ... I don't have photos to share. Generally I don't plan out my cards before I work on them, I create as I go. But I do find with these amazing light features, that you have to plan ahead and know exactly where you will have your PUSH button, where you will place the light and how you are going to disguise the wires. All before actually starting the construction. That's my opinion, anyhow. I suggest you check out the Pear Blossom Press website and/or YouTube channel as they will have video's that will help you.
