“Happy Fall Y’all” Blog Hop!

Hello crafty friends ...

I was excited to be invited as a Guest Designer for this "Happy Fall Y'All Blog Hop" by Scrap 'n Stamp. Anytime I have an opportunity to share and promote a Canadian company I'm happy to do so, and I have been a customer at Scrap 'n Stamp for several months now.

Box cards like this can sometimes take a long time to create so I wanted to do a simplified version for you. As I showed in the video, I was able to cut 24 stitched leaves with only two passes through my die cutting machine!  I did ink the edges of my leaves because I prefer that look - but you could easily leave off this step to save time.

Box cards can also be bulky, so I didn't use nearly the foam tape I normally would have for a 'regular' card and that offsets the extra layers of card stock from forming the box.

It's very hard to see in the photos, but I adhered some tiny clear star confetti around the card and they catch the light and are SO pretty! Why stars? The colours of this card reminded me of a beautiful twilight where you can sometimes see stars in the sky even before it gets totally dark.

I didn't add a sentiment to the panel on the back, as that is where I will write a note and sign our names. Still, I added a few of the die cut leaves and tucked in the stamped Wishbone for good measure.

I used Chameleon Color Tone markers to colour the racoon!

Woven Basket Box Card for a 99th Birthday

Hello crafty friends ...

Today I'm sharing the birthday card I made for a friend's Mother, who is turning 99 this year! I chose Karen Burniston's Woven Basket Box Pop Up to make this lovely 3-D card that folds completely flat for mailing.

Since it had been awhile since I'd made one of these, I went to the website to re-watch the assembly video. At the end of the video, Karen B features cards from the Design Team and I really liked the one Kelly Booth had made with the flaps on the outside of the basket, and a ribbon bow tucked inside. That was my inspiration for how I assembled this one.

The photo above and the photo below both show the Woven Basket in the flat, folded position.

I added a lot of dimensional bling, since the card was being hand delivered. If you kept the flower centres flat the card would likely mail for a single stamp.

I added the numbers to an acetate strip after the card was assembled, and never thought to also check that it would still fit in a 5 x 7" envelope. Nope - I had adhered it too high. Rather than pull it off and re-attach lower, I found this Hallmark envelope in my stash - 8-1/4 x 5-3/4.  A card stock panel was adhered inside envelope to stabilize it and give the flowers support while the card is in the envelope.

Wedding Box Card

Hello my crafty friends

A friend's daughter is getting married this month, and I offered to make them a wedding card to give the happy couple. I had trouble figuring out what I wanted to do - I knew it would be an interactive card, but which one? Finally I decided on a box card, since the card will likely be displayed for a little while.

I find it hard making a card for a big occasion when I don't know the people but my friend suggested maybe shades of purple with some silver. That was my jumping off point. While this is not a Karen Burniston Pop Up, I  ended up using FIVE KB dies on it. I guess that shows how truly versatile her dies can be!

The Happily Ever After die is SO perfect for a wedding card. It cuts as a single piece which makes it nice and easy to adhere.  I cut the Lawn Fawn Box card base from a heavy pearlized white card stock, which doesn't show up in the photos but is really pretty in real life.

Both the little scalloped border on the inside supports and the bride and groom dies are from the Cake Pop Up. Which was another die set I had considered for the occasion. The 'lacy' heart is one of my favourites - an older die from Stampin' Up. I still remember how happy I was when I was able to purchase that set.

I used the stitched label from the Gift Card Label set as a place for my friends to sign their names. The press dot hearts are from the Circle Charm Pop Up.

Of course it folds completely flat for mailing. While the box card on it's own fits easily into an A2 envelope, I added the large heart at the back which makes it far too tall for that. I added some coordinating paper to line the inside & flap of a 6" square envelope instead. To me, large square envelopes just seem perfect for a wedding.

Box Card with Castle, Princess and Dragon

Hello my crafty friends

One of the new dies in Karen Burniston's January 2019 Release is this Woven Basket Box Card die. It comes with flowers and a sprig to make a lovely bouquet, but of course I had to do something different with it. I chose to use it as a regular 'box card' and made a Birthday Card for a little Princess. Namely, our nephew's little girl who will be turning one soon.

I used a bunch of dies from previous releases, the Castle Pop-Up, the Knight and Dragon, the Princess and Mermaid and Word Set 5 Royalty. All the dies I used are listed in the Supplies below. I wanted to show you how well all of the KB dies work together - old and new releases work seamlessly!

Since Princesses need to sparkle, I used pretty glitter paper for the dress, crown, and also the turret flags and dragon's wings. I like how the two different greys for the woven part resemble bricks - this Woven Basket Box Card goes together so slick!

This is the back of the card, and where we will sign our names.

I hope I've shown you how to think outside the box (pun intended) to use this fun woven basket for more than just flowers. I also wanted to show you that you can fill it with a few items and still have a card with a lot of WOW. Not every box card needs to be stuffed full and take hours to complete. 

While it's a free-standing pop-up card, it still folds completely flat for mailing! Because I wanted some height to the castle and dragon, this one will fit in an A6 envelope and mail for a single stamp.

Pop-Up Box Card for Christmas

Good morning friends

I'm still crazy about Doodlebug Designs, so pulled out some of their printed embellishments and made a 'Box Card' for a friend.

While you can also add decorative panels to the upper flaps, I tend to leave them empty as you don't see them when the card is being displayed and it adds to the bulk for mailing.

I added a cute Cut Apart (or Journal Card) from one of the Doodlebug papers from my stash, and a die cut banner as a place to sign my name.

Love how this dimensional card folds completely flat for mailing, then pops up and stays open for display.

Beachy Box Card

Good morning friends

I often get out older dies to use on my projects. After all, I liked them enough to purchase them at the time, and just because they are a couple of years old they still have a ton of life left in them! Especially when you pair them with some newer items as I did here with this Beach Box Card.

I used several of Karen Burniston scene and charm dies and beach themed patterned paper for my card share today.

Christmas Magic Box Card

Good morning friends

I'm back today with another box card using the sweet scalloped box card die by Lawn Fawn. 

I added the fence from the House & Fence Pop-Up by Karen Burniston, as well as a couple of trees from the Winter Charms set. The tiny hearts are from the new Cat and Dog die set, and the wreath is from the Sleigh Pop-Up set.

This patterned paper stack had several sheets of printed tags in it. I have been using them for a couple of Christmases now and honestly, I'm done working with them. If I can figure out a way to use the full sheets as a card I will. Otherwise those sheets will head to the recycle bin.

I did use several of them for this card though and they sure made it speedy to decorate!

Hedgehog Home Box Card

Good morning friends

I have a fun card to share today using a bunch of Karen Burniston dies, a new Prickley Pear stamp and the Scalloped Box Card by Lawn Fawn.

I chose the Gnome Home stamp set because I thought the mushroom homes would make cute houses for Karen Burniston's various cutie patootie animals. Here I used the Hedgehog from the Winter Animals set.

I have a goal with these box cards, and that is to make them simpler. I have made several and they can take quite a long time to put together. Once I have put that kind of effort into a card, I only want to send it to someone who would appreciate it.

However, they can be really cute without being stuffed full and they take a fraction of the time to create. Box Cards make an impression, and there is lots of room to embellish as much - or as little - as you want. I'm hoping to use my Box Card dies more now that I have wrapped my head around keeping them being simpler to create.

I added two sections (or shelves) to the inside, cut 4 strips of grass to fit, added the heart-holding-hedgehog, a stamped and coloured mushroom and the tree from the Tree Pop-Up. The card was finished in record time, too.

The back side has a stitched rectangle for a handwritten message.

I love how they fold completely flat for mailing! While the Lawn Fawn Scalloped Box Card was made to fit into an A2 envelope, on my card the tree stands above the scalloped edge of the card back. It will easily fit into a 5 x 7 envelope though and mail for a single stamp.

Birthday Party Scalloped Box Card

Good morning friends

A sweet friend gifted me with a gift card to Scrappin' Great Deals here in Canada. I wanted to use it for something I wanted but likely wouldn't buy myself, so chose the Lawn Fawn Scallop Box Card die set! I hadn't purchased this one because I have two box card dies ... one is a BigZ Extended die and the other is a wafer thin die - but both make a square card. I had really liked this rectangle one and had been making them with help from a YouTube video by Sandi MacIver. Oh, but I wanted this die set! 

I used it here for the first time, making a Birthday card for our Granddaughter Alma. Karen Burniston's animals fit perfectly inside! Here I've used the Squirrel from the Woodland Animals and the Hedgehog from the Winter Animal sets. The party hat and gifts come from the Birthday Charm die set - I just covered the hang holes with a Glitter Dot.

The little pink flowers were cut using the smallest flower and the largest flower centre (circle) from the Flower Pot Pop-Up, and I used the Nature Edges for the grass.

The spines on the Hedgehog were cut from Hero Arts stamp packaging. If a stamp set comes with cool packaging, I save it to re-use. The poles come with the Scallop Box Card and I paired it with a stamped and die cut banner from the Stamps of Life.

If I had kept the banner lower, this card would fit in an A2 envelope, but since it will be hand delivered I will be giving it in a clear bag envelope so I have some extra room. Below you can see how the card folds flat for mailing.

Here is the back of the card, with a stamped greeting and die cut gift and still lots of room to add a note and signature.

Puppy Box Card

Good morning friends

Today's share is a card I sent to a friend. She is really good at sending out cards, but said she doesn't often receive hand made ones. I also felt like making a box card, so pulled out my Sizzix BigZ Extended die for the card base.

I purchased this sweet stamp set in the Spring - dogs and letters ... how could I not? The dogs have shiny eyes and noses thanks to a Glaze Pen. For the card base I decided to use one of my (many) water coloured backgrounds, done with Colorbursts and Magical Shakers. The stitched circle was done with Distress Oxide inks then sprinkled with water for the speckled effect.

I added Karen Burniston's tree die to the back wall, and the grass from her Nature Edges adds the filler inside. The flowers that are included with the Tree Pop-Up cut 6 at a time, so I had enough for my tree with one pass through the Big Shot. Gotta love that.

Often these cards are stuffed full and take AGES to make. I'm trying to simplify them so they don't take quite as long to make and I think it still looks cute with the different layers. The box folds flat for mailing in a standard A2 envelope.

On a side note, we had dinner guests last week from Israel. She is an artist who works in acrylics and I enjoyed seeing photos of her many paintings. She wanted to see my craft room and was in AWE of the cards I showed her, simply because they were interactive. Both her and her husband couldn't get over the precision of Karen Burniston's dies. Of course she immediately picked up on some of the water coloured backgrounds and asked about them.

I gave them both a quick demonstration and loved seeing their faces when I spritzed the powders with water. I'm sure I had the exact same face when I saw them for the first time. In face I still make that face when I use them, ha ha.  I gathered up nice selection of colours and an extra spray bottle and gave them to her to play with when she returns home. Looks like I'll have to order some replacement bottles!
