Astronaut Pop Up Birthday Card

Hello my crafty friends

On Wednesday I shared a Space Ship Surprise Ball Pop Up, and I wanted to use up the rest of the 12 x 12" patterned paper sheet. This is the card I came up with!

The end of the banner was trimmed flush with the right side of the rocket ship panel. I then tucked the cut off end to the left side of the banner for a different look.

Inside I used Karen Burniston's Explosion Pop Up paired with the Rocket Pop Up and Space Charms.

The little stars included in the Surprise Ball Pop Up cuts three stars at a time to make it easy to cut a nice pile of stars, which I did to decorate the inside.

With three Grandsons, I enjoy making boy cards and this one fits the bill for sure.

Karen Burniston joins Pear Blossom Press for a BLOG HOP!!

Hello my crafty friends

You are in for a treat today, as we are collaborating with the Pear Blossom Press team for an amazing Blog Hop. Pear Blossom Press makes cool Chibi light packages that make creating cards with a light up feature much easier. Then Amanda & hubby came out with EZ Lights which are meant to work with interactive, pop up cards! Yes you heard that right. Pop Up cards that also light up.  I know, right?

There are prizes and discounts too, which I have listed below all the photos.

I have to say these things are SLICK and I am both impressed and excited to use the EZ Lights again.  You are going to want to settle in, because I actually made TWO cards for the Blog Hop today. Amanda and I are on Lynda Kanase's Design Team together and I wanted to show her some extra support with a second card.

So for my extra long post today,  I'm sharing the first card with a YouTube video followed by details, notes and still shots. After that will be the second card, again with a YouTube video followed by the still shots and the Blog Hop links so you don't miss any of the cool projects on the hop. A full supply list of my cards will be at the end of the post.

This was my first time using the Chibioni lights and of course we are stepping up the process by creating pop-ups that also light up. So there were some 'trials and tribulations' but that had nothing to do with the EZ Lights. It was more with the planning on where to place the wires and how to attach everything. I'm not usually a planner when it comes to card making, and tend to create as I go.

I die cut the rocket and readied the card base along with the other pop up pieces then figured out where to put all the elements. I wanted the rocket flames to light up which meant the wires needed to come from below. I cut a slit in the (unassembled) pop up flames piece and threaded the lights through that from the back side. Below you can see the little slit I cut into the flame arm.

When I knew that was going to work, I was able to adhere the moon piece inside my card as per Karen B's Rocket Pop Up assembly video. I wanted it to be really secure, so I also used a small stapler. The staples show on both the front and back but both were going to be covered with card stock panels so that wasn't a concern. Then I adhered the wired flame pop up arm to the moon base.

When I finished assembling the lighted rocket pop up, I realized I hadn't done enough planning and I now had the wires and Battery/Switch piece sitting on the inside of the card. Hmmmmm ...  While I wanted the switch to be on the inside, I could't figure out how to disguise all of the wires with just stars & planets etc. I fixed that with a craft knife, cutting a upside down U shaped flap large enough to pop theBattery/Switch through to the back of the card. I secured the flap and the wires on the back with a  piece of double sided tape leaving the rest of the wires and the Battery/Switch hanging free from the back of the card. There is lots of length to work with on the wires, which is great. With the double sided tape on the back, the flap is secure and you can barely see it from the inside! Note at each point I tested the lights to be sure they still worked.

The next thing was how to get the Battery/Switch back to the inside of the card.  I really wanted the push button on the inside. So out came the kraft knife again. I figured out where I wanted the switch to be and how I wanted to disguise it then cut another flap. I popped the Battery/Switch back to the inside and secured the excess wires in a curve on the back of the card using a large piece double sided tape.  Then I used red line tape to adhere the Battery/Switch where I wanted it inside the card and added the double layer of foam tape around it. Note - the Battery/Switch is the same thickness as a double layer of foam tape, which is what you would typically use for a shaker card.

I pressed the spot where the PUSH ME button will be ... and the rocket tail lit up ... and I honestly did a little happy dance. SO flippin' cool!! I cut a slightly smaller panel for the back of the card and used wet glue just around the edges to secure it to the card back. You'd never know there are flaps cut and excess wire lengths curved up in between the layers, and the extra panel helps balance out the card weight with the decorated panel on the card front.

Below is the front of my card. To create the clouds, I used a hand made mask. When Karen B first came out with the Nature Edges, I cut one of the clouds from scrap paper and I'm still using it! I had to add one of the aliens and space ship from the Space Charms - they are just SO cute! I penned the sentiment with Chameleon Fine Liners - see how the colour changes as you write?

Here are the detail shots, and my second card follows them.

Whew! - still with me? I hope so ... and I don't mind at all if you are just looking at the pictures and not doing any reading. I only added the notes and tips for those that might want to recreate this card.

For my second card, I had an idea to create a camping card and this is what I came up with. There are detail shots below the video, as well as the BLOG HOP LINKS!!!  You won't want to miss any of the fun inspiration on this blog hop.

I have had this patterned paper package for several years and I was happy with how well it matched my theme. The fish come with the Camping Charms, and I strung them on a loop of twine after brushing their bellies with Wink of Stella.

By adding a circle to the Katherine Label arm, you get a completely different look!

How cute is this Camping Riley? He is so fun, and I coloured him with my Chameleon Color Tone and Color Top markers.

I had added some yellow vellum behind the campfire, but it didn't really show up so I coloured it red with a Copic marker. When you press the PRESS ME stamp on the right hand side of the card, two stars and the campfire light up on the left hand side of the card. 😀

The tree trunk was quickly snipped from a scrap of brown paper. I stamped the PRESS ME on the tree before adhering it to the card base, over the Battery/Switch. The Battery/Switch just fits under the tree, which is the fall away portion of the tree from the Christmas Tree Pop Stand.

Finally, I added a signing block on the back of the card. I didn't want to change up the inside, or distract from the lights and action.

Enjoy The Rocket Ride!

Hello my crafty friends

Welcome to Karen Burniston's Designer Challenge for September 2019, where the theme is: "ENJOY THE RIDE" - use the Train Pivot Panels or the Rocket Pop-up for a card of any theme.

Note, I have some 'how to' photos below the finished card ones for those that are interested.

I chose to make a Birthday Card for our Grandson and I used both the Rocket Pop Up AND the Train Pivot Panel die set.

First I created three galaxy background panels using Pan Pastels (a highly pigmented chalk media), a sponge, some pearlized paint spatters and I was REALLY happy with how well they turned out. For the panel that is on the front of the card, I first masked off the white area with painters tape and did the chalk sponging over the tape. Once everything was sprayed and dry I removed the tape and had this perfect white strip to adhere the die cut words to.

I used the 'THE' die to cut through the white piece, then backed the opening with a small scrap of the aqua card stock. I like adding small details like this to my cards. Then I added the rest of the greeting from Enjoy The Ride and a pair of the Space Charms with the hanging holes snipped off.

I had been wanting to try my Train Pivot Panel adaptation with acetate, so that is what I went with for my Designer Challenge card today. Fair warning though - working with acetate that needs to fold in a certain way is not for the faint of heart. The final effect is fabulous, but you have to be prepared for bumps in the road and give yourself lots of time. As I show in the video, the acetate has quite the memory and this card just SPRINGS open! Which is quite fun, actually.

Another note, is that with the chalky Pan Pastels and the hairspray used to seal in the colour - adhesives would not work. Not wet glue, not Red Liner tape - nothing stuck. I resorted to using brads and small staples, which are shown on the In Progress photos at the end of the post. They hold everything quite securely and turned out to be a good way to adhere the acetate.

Here is the card opened, and likely how it will be displayed. I added his name with the Alpha, and used stars from various other KB die sets which are listed in the supplies below.

I added a stamped blond boy to show through the window and added a few more space charms as embellishments. The rocket was placed very carefully so in the closed position it wouldn't stick out the bottom of the card. With the addition of the martian on top I was right at the bottom edge. There was a small portion of the acetate train engine sticking out past the rocket, which was easily trimmed away with scissors.

The Happy Birthday was cut twice from white card stock and adhered together for stability, but then I felt there was too much contrast from the rest of the card. I added some silver Nuvo Drops and liked it much better.

This card is very bulky, but I since we will be hand delivering it that is not a concern.

While I am getting requests to do YouTube video's showing how I create my cards, that is beyond my technical ability at this point. So I thought I'd take a few photos as I was working to help those that have questions. But first, here is a short YouTube video showing this card 'in action'.

Below you can see the 'almost done' galaxy backgrounds, done with a simple sponge and Pan Pastels. I just added random colours, starting with a yellow. Then I added a little orange around the yellow, some purple and then two different blues. I don't overthink these things - they are supposed to be random and no two will be the same.

When I tested the background with a tissue, the colour still rubbed off so I then sprayed the panels with hairspray to seal them. This also brightens the colours a fair bit!

Then I added some white shimmer paint to an acrylic block and spattered the backgrounds with a wet paintbrush. I repeated the process with the gold shimmer paint. And boy, did I have a MESS. I think I spattered everything in a two foot radius and I needed to do a fair bit of clean up. Next time I spatter I will be doing it inside a box.

Next I cut the Train Pivot Panel from acetate and this is where I discovered that adhesives won't stick to the chalk & hairspray backgrounds. Ha. I used a small stapler on the two areas it would reach, then ended up going with brads on the others. Not the look I was going for but as you can see in the finished card it is just fine.

I hope you've enjoyed my card today - be sure to check out what the rest of the design team has come up with for the challenge. Their blogs are linked on the right. Karen Burniston will have her project on her blog on Wednesday September 4th.

Rocket Flip Card

Hello my crafty friends

Today I'm sharing the Birthday Card I made for our nephew's little guy who lives in Arizona. I adore Karen Burniston's Rocket Pop Up and I used it here with my Triple Flip adaptation and a vertical orientation. I am so happy with how it turned out!

When I shared my first card using the Rocket Pop Up, people noticed the background and wondered how I did it. Well I had used wide washi tape and could take no credit for creating such a pretty background. Since the washi tape can be a bit slick and I had trouble getting adhesives to stick to it, I decided to make my own galaxy background panels using Pan Pastels on white card stock. There are  some 'in progress photos' below the finished card ones if you are interested.

They turned out SOOOO good! I rarely post things in the same order I create them, so the backgrounds were actually for the Designer Challenge card in September. I had one leftover panel which I used for this card. I used Stampin' Up's Shimmer Paint to spatter the background after I was finished with the Pan Pastels. On this one I also added some diluted white acrylic paint. For the DC card, I had spatters EVERYWHERE. I think I accidentally spattered a 2 foot radius - it was crazy. So for this one I spread out scrap letter sized paper, thinking that would give me enough room to keep the spatters contained. It didn't - so I think I am going to have to get a box to do any spattering in. I had a lot of cleaning up to do after I was done with these backgrounds! I also tried using a small dot stencil and my finger to rub a little shimmer paint onto the background panel.  NOTE: between the chalk from the Pan Pastels and the hairspray I used to seal these galaxy panels - they were even slicker than the Washi Tape! Ha.

When you pull the tab, the rocket flips to the left and reveals a sentiment and a stitched star. That star was strategically placed to hide the slot that cuts with the Triple Flip - remember it is designed to have three paddles to flip and I only used one here.

Here is a look at the inside. The cute astronaut is on a paper spring for some additional fun.

I have had several requests to do a full YouTube video tutorial but at this point it's beyond my skill level. Instead I took a few photos to show you how I did the Triple Flip adaptation.

Below you can see how I die cut the main Triple Flip die - lining up the far right edge of the die with the panel which was cut to 4-1/4" wide - same as the width of the navy card.

I also added extra foam tape bits above and below the flipper arm to keep it from sagging ...

The small rectangle comes with the Triple Flip die set, and I cut two from navy card stock and sandwiched the paddle in between them. Below is the flipper as it would be in the closed position. It was the perfect base to adhere the rocket too! I cut two identical rockets and sandwiched them with this rectangle in between so it looks good from the front and also when you flip it over.

This is what it looks like when you pull the arm. And you can see the slot that die cuts and needed to be hidden with the stitched star.

I have a little YouTube video to show you the card in action:

Rocket Spinner Card

Hello my crafty friends

Today I'm sharing a different way to use the new Rocket Pop-Up die set. I made a flat card, but it's still interactive because the rocket spins and travels around the circle track!

To make the spinner track, first I adhered a piece of the Galaxy wide washi tape to a panel of white card stock, and cut that out with the largest Crosshatch Rectangle. Then I die cut a Crosshatch Circle from that rectangle. I added foam tape to the rectangle, being careful to leave room for a penny to slide easily inside the circle. There is a scant 1/8" width of foam tape on the outer edge of the rectangle by the circle. This was adhered to the front of a deep blue folded A2 card.

I nestled the Crosshatch Circle back into the opening, adhering it directly to the blue card, which gave me a seamless galaxy background with a crosshatch detail on the track. Then I die cut a smaller circle from a Colorburst/Magical Shaker background from my stash and added foam tape leaving 1/4" free around the outer edge. That allows a penny to slide around the track easily. I like to add at least one penny to my sliders as the weight allows the item to slide easier. We don't have pennies anymore in Canada so whenever I visit the US I make sure to save a few for my slider cards. The circle was centred on the Crosshatch Circle and adhered.

I added a small piece of acetate under the window - I like the shine this gives when the card catches the light. I outlined the blue pearl rocket with a silver Sharpie marker for an additional detail.

Here is a peek at the inside ...

I will include a short YouTube video so you can see how the rocket spins and rocks around the track. So fun and a different way to use the dies. Our dies are an investment and I love sharing different ways to use them!

Rocket Pop-Up - a Sneak Peek!!

Hello my crafty friends

The Design Team can start to share Sneak Peeks of Karen Burnitson' new release, so that is what I used for my card today. There are such FUN dies in this release!!

I kept the front nice and simple, because the fun is on the inside. There is a great new die set that says "Enjoy the Ride", but this astronaut from the new Space Charms looked like he was waving so I chose the new 'Howdy' instead.  Oh, these Space Charms are going to get a good work out for sure - they are so fun! I simply snipped off the hanging hole to make them card elements, but as charms they will be really cute too. I added the astronaut to the card front with a paper spring for even more fun.

Below you can see the card as it is opening and you get your first peek at the Rocket Pop-Up!!

Ta Da!!! The rocket ship lifts and hovers above the moonscape when the card is opened. I am absolutely crazy about this die set and have LOTS of ideas for it. When I went to make my card, I decided to open my wide 'Galaxy' Washi Tape for it. I've had this tape for months and have yet to use it. Well let me tell you, as pretty as it is, it is really hard to get anything to STICK to it. I finally had to resort to red-liner tape because wet glue was just popping off like the stuff was made of silicone. So ... just a heads up. I will use it for some of my other Rocket ideas, but as backgrounds and not where I have to attach something to it securely as you do with a Pop-Up mechanism. NOTE: I wonder if maybe I wasn't leaving the glue to set long enough on the slick surface of the mechanism. While the tapes lifted off easily, everything is nice and secure now.

I was wondering what I could die cut the moonscape etc from, when I remembered I have several sheets done with Color Burst/Magical Shakers. I pulled one out that I hadn't been keen on but it worked perfectly! I cut the spaceship, stars, moonscape, flames, Howdy, astronaut visor etc all from the one sheet.

It's hard to see in the photo, but I put a small piece of acetate behind the window so it reflects the light when you open the card.

As Karen B. did on her packaging, I added one of the little martian charms into the spaceship charm - snipping the hanging holes off of both. Again - hard to see in the photo but the wide piece of the spaceship is actually silver foiled card stock like on the rocket 'wings'. In the photo below it looks like white!

Finally, here is another view so you can get a look look at the Pop-Up. Have I said how much I like this new Rocket Pop-Up??

I thought you might like to see the Color Burst/Magical Shaker card stock I did my die cutting from. The sheet is 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" (half of a letter sized sheet) and honestly, it was a hot mess on it's own. But I knew I could die cut SOMETHING from the sections I liked so I kept it with the ones I did like.

I have also added a video for you so you can see the pop-up dimension a little better.
