Double Pop Up Gatefold Card for Karen Burniston's Designer Challenge

Hello crafty friends ...

Welcome to Karen Burniston's July Designer Challenge:  Theme: "TWO FOLDS" - make a card that incorporates two folds. This could be a side gatefold, a top gatefold, a side fold with an extra card inside, a z-fold, a double easel, etc. Any theme!

I wanted to make a special card for a friend's special birthday and this was the perfect opportunity!. The front of my Gatefold Card (two folds) has the Crosshatch Circles and also uses the Word Set 2 - Birthday, and the Numbers. Magnets hold the card closed.

In August 2018 I made a Gatefold Card with the Palm Tree Pop Up, which you can see HERE if you are interested. The following year, teammate Frances Byrne created a Gatefold with the Christmas Tree Pop Up instead of the Palm Tree. By then Karen B had released the Family Room Pop Up, so Frances added that as well. So my card today is a mashup of those two ideas! When you open the card, it lays nice and flat to display the pop up Palm Tree and Family Room too.

I LOVE the Palm Tree Pop Up - it's so easy to make and folds down completely flat for mailing.

The Family Room Pop Up is another fun one, and is perfect for these times when people are staying home more to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Note:  I cut the patterned paper card base to 12 x 5" then scored it scored at 3" and 9". Patterned Paper is not sturdy enough for a card base, but I knew I'd need to hide the two holes that die cut into the base for the Palm Tree Pop Up and would be adding card stock & more patterned paper to the front flaps and the back as well.

Palm Tree Celebrate Pop-Up Card

Good morning friends

Today's card using a few more of the upcoming new release by Karen Burniston ... the Ocean Animals, Wine Charms and Celebrate die. I've paired them here with the Palm Tree Pop-Up, but used it a little differently as you will see .

The front panel were fun to make. I cut the decorator panel slightly smaller than the Gatefold card front, which is 6 x 5". Then I die cut the stitched waves from the Tropical Scene several times across the panel. It doesn't reach all the way to the edges, so I just centred the die between the edges each time I ran it through the Big Shot. Then I cut the panel in half vertically and adhered each half to the sides of my Gatefold card. I like the embossed look the waves give the panel, but since they didn't cut all the way to the edges it was easy peasy to adhere the side panels.

The light water colour panel was just a scrap of white card stock I had grabbed when there were some ink puddles on my glass mat. I dipped and dragged it through the ink then put it aside to dry as I didn't need it but didn't want to 'waste' the ink puddles. I always save these pieces to use later on on something.

I die cut the Octopus from the new Ocean Animals, and several wine glasses from the new Wine Charms. I used a water colour panel from my stash that I had created with Colorburst and Magical Shakers. The purple isn't nearly as harsh in real life as it shows in the photos. The Wine Charms are really cool - they are going to be a fun addition to many people's collections. They have two differently shaped glasses, two differently shaped bottles, the labels for the bottles and the 'filler' for the glasses, as well as a bunch of grapes. I cut the wine glass filler from white card stock and added some shimmer with a Wink of Stella pen.

Here is a look at the inside, where I added the Palm Tree Pop-Up to the left side of my Gatefold card. I like that this is such a different way to use this Pop-Up, instead of a standard top or side fold card.

The Sea Turtle from the Sea Animals is holding one of the wine bottles, and I added some stamped dot clusters as well as a sprinkling of die cut sea shells from the Tropical Scene die set.

The Celebrate is the same font as the previously released Happy Birthday die that I use so often and it's a nice big size to make a statement on your projects. The crab from the Sea Animals is also holding a wine glass. The new Ocean Animals also has a crab, but it is bigger and facing the other direction so that will be fun to pair with the Sea Animal crab for lots of different scenes etc.

The Palm Tree island comes from the Tropical Scene set as well.

Pop-Up Cactus Birthday Card

Good morning friends

My card share today wasn't even supposed to be a card - I just wanted to try the technique of adding a cactus to the base of the Palm Tree Pop-Up by Karen Burniston. Since it all worked out, I went ahead and made it into a Birthday card for our grandson Zachary as they visited Arizona in the Spring.

I was able to use up some patterned paper that had been hanging around for far too long as the patterns and colours were perfect for the theme. The front has a two toned Happy Birthday (love that KB die) and a Barrel Cactus die by Lynda Kanase sporting a festive banner.

Inside I used Karen Burniston's Palm Tree Pop-Up base and Lynda Kanase's 3-D Saguaro cactus together to create the Pop-Up inside. It turned out so good - I was really happy with it!

Since it was for a birthday, I added banners to the cactus as well. The letter and number stickers were in the package with the papers and I was happy to use some of them up too.

The card folds flat for mailing! The photo below is of the card as it is closing - you can see how it all collapses inward.

Apparently Zachary was thrilled with is card, and ran around showing all the family his cactus. That did my heart good and sorta made up for us having to miss his family birthday party.

Tips & Tricks
--It did take a bit of fiddling to get it to work, but since I was learning and figuring it out as I went I was OK with that. Just a heads up to be patient.
--If you are going to duplicate this card, I would suggest you use a lighter weight card stock for the cactus as there are four layers of card stock trying to fold together.

--Another option would be to use the Christmas Tree Pop-Up base.
-- You could add a different tree or other shape as well!

Palm Tree Birthday Pop-Up Card

Good morning friends

I love being able to make personalized cards for friends and family. This one was made for a friend who loves Maui. I used the new Tropical Scene for the card front, adding a palm tree from the Palm Tree Pop-Up and a cute flag from the Castle Pop-Up.

The ocean waves were cut from an empty tissue box - the pattern was too pretty for me to toss it into recycling.

Here is the top view of the card, opened. The new Palm Tree Pop-Up is so cool!

Even though it is 3-D, it folds completely flat for mailing.

I penned "Wishing you a MAUI special day". We had the chance to vacation in Maui with these friends a couple of years ago, and she bought a tee shirt that says "Maui is my Happy Place". So I knew she would appreciate this play on words.

I added a little die cut banner in the crabs claws, with a Prickley Pear Happy Birthday stamp.
